Back to School Donation Drive 2011-2012

The Thornhill Parent Faculty Club (PFC) welcomes new and returning families to the 2011-2012 school year!  We are proud of the strong school that we, as a community, have built – one that fosters social and academic growth as well as an environment that is fun and enriching for our children. In order to sustain this, we need your help!

The Back to School Donation Drive (BSDD) is Thornhill’s first major fundraiser of the school year. The goal is to begin raising money to defray the operating budget.  Since this is a public school, you may expect that your taxes should cover your child’s education.  The reality is that our school is funded both publicly and privately.  Some of the most basic services your child receives at Thornhill would not be possible without your contributions.

The PFC’s operating budget for school programs is approximately $187,500; which equates to $500 per student. The school budget has sustained a 30% cut in the last two years so, in anticipation of further budget cuts, we are asking for a $700 donation per child, either in one lump sum, or spread out over the course of all fundraising events for the year.  These include a wide range of events such as the Walk-A-Thon, the Auction and the Carnival.

This year we are striving for 100% participation in this back-to-school check-writing campaign.  We welcome your contribution at any level.  Check with your employer to see if they will provide a company match.  Remember, when you write a check, it’s 100% tax deductible!

Here are some details of where your money goes:

  • Personnel: 60% of the operating budget is for personnel which covers the following:
    • Coach: full-time
    • Part-time art teacher
    • Part-time Aides (Three classroom and one clerical)
    • Part-time Librarian
    • Part-time music teacher for Kindergarten, first and second grades.
  • Art: $40 per student is used for art supplies and for field trips related to the arts and visual arts.  We are fortunate to have Ms. Gibson on board as our part-time Art Teacher.
  • Teacher and Staff Supplies: Our wonderful teachers and staff regularly reach into their own pockets to supplement supplies and materials needed to provide an enriching learning experience. The PFC also pitches in with a small fund for each teacher to use at his or her discretion for classroom needs.
