Thornhill Named a 2010 Distinguished School
Thornhill is proud to have been named a 2010 California Distinguished School. This distinction is given to “the state’s most exemplary and inspiring schools.” Chabot, Montclair, Peralta and Thornhill share the honor with just 480 of the state’s more than five thousand elementary schools, and prevailed in a year where the selection criteria was, according to the California Department of Education, “more stringent than ever.” In announcing the selections, State Superintendent of Instruction Jack O’Connell noted that the winning schools are boosting achievement for all student populations in the face of an extreme budget crisis.
Notably, Thornhill has been named a California Distinguished School in three of the last ten years (2000, 2006 and 2010), which is more than any other Oakland Public School.
Thornhill has a reputation for having high academic and behavioral standards that help give students the tools they need to further their role in society. The staff takes great satisfaction in the knowledge that our students continue to build upon their education here and achieve success as citizens in our community.
Immediate success among Thornhill’s students is noted through high test scores. Notably, current Average Performance Index (API) test scores rank Thornhill as one of the highest scoring elementary school in Alameda County and among the top one percent of schools in the state.
